Your First Fishing Charter in Puerto Vallarta: What to Expect

A practical first-trip checklist: what to confirm before leaving, what to bring and what to ask when you are new to fishing.

Your first fishing trip doesn't need to start with knowing the names of the fish or how to use the tackle. Start with who is coming, how long you'd like to be out and what you'd enjoy about the day.
If this is your first time, tell us when you book. Let us know who wants to fish and who would prefer to come along for the boat ride.
Before you book
Tell us your group size, whether children are joining you and whether anyone has concerns about spending time at sea. You don't need everyone to have the same level of interest in fishing to start planning together.
Our daytime sportfishing charters run from four to fourteen hours, in whole-hour steps. If you're unsure which to choose, our guide to fishing trip lengths explains those options and the separate offshore trips.
Before heading to the marina
Our trips leave from Marina Nuevo Vallarta. Confirm the meeting point and arrival time for your booking before you set off; the marina name alone isn't a meeting instruction.
Check the food and drinks included with your chosen trip and decide what else you'd like to bring. The pricing and inclusions guide explains how these change with the trip length.
Let the crew know you're new
Before you start fishing, explain what you've tried before, if anything, and ask for help with anything unfamiliar. Useful questions include how to handle the equipment, where to stand and what to do when you get a bite.
If you'd like to understand the equipment and support available before booking, ask us about your selected trip. You don't need to arrive knowing the techniques.
What to bring
- A hat, sunglasses and sunscreen for time outdoors.
- Comfortable shoes suitable for a boat, plus a light extra layer.
- A protective bag for your phone and anything else you want to keep dry.
- Any food and drinks you'd like to bring alongside the trip's inclusions.
Keep your expectations flexible
Some of the day will be spent traveling or waiting, and conditions may affect where you fish. No trip can promise a particular catch. If there's a fish or a fishing area you're especially interested in, mention it before booking so you can discuss what's realistic for your date.
